Week 2

Living the good life!

The city Chiang Mai is beautiful and relaxed. I love wondering around the old town tripping over temples as I go. There are too many, so I won’t bore you with naming them all but just a few I loved: Wat Lok Mali, Wat Kuan Ka Ma, Wat Pan Tao & Wat Chedi Luang. Just outside the city (the view from our salt water swimming pool) there is a mountain with more tempels. On Tuesday we did the Wat Pha Lat Hike, a monk trail to the tempel half way up the mountain. The view was amazing!

In old town there are some museums and the Chiang Mai city arts and cultural centre. When I’m back I will try to explain the history of this province but it is very complicated. The best way to say it, north of Thailand was Lanna, south was Siam (and a lot of other kingdoms…).  After a lot of migration and conflicts (within Thailand but also with Burma, China, Cambodia etc.) Thailand is now as we know it. But still there are a lot of original tribes, called the hill tribes like Karen, Hmong, Lisu and Lahu who are  minorities now and live in little villages in the mountains with their own traditions.

To educate us a little more we also went to the Textile museum. Apparently this is a museum of the Bank of Thailand, nice tax write off , so no entrance fee and private tour to boot! This museum is filled with private collections of the oldest money and coins in Thailand such as silver bracelets and of course textile, clothing from every era and even from the late queen.

Tomorrow we take a bus to Pai.
