Week 4

This week was very touristic… Just standing in line to get that photo to show your friends what crazy amazing place you have been now!

Here we go:

First we’ve finally been to Doi Suthep, the temple on the mountain (our view from the swimming pool). The tempel is actually called Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Doi Suthep is the name of the mountain it’s build on. It takes about 30 minutes to ride up. After that you can take an elevator, but for youngsters like us there is the original stairs. 309 steps later you will find yourself among a lot of other tourist (mostly chinees) pushing each other away to get your perfect photo. Where normally the temple ground and it’s chedi’s are a place for peace and quit… Here it is not, I have to say Wow… very disturbing.

We decided to go further op the mountain to Doi Pui, a small hill tribe village. Here it was more pleasant. We walked to the garden with a little ” waterfall” and a view over Chiang Mai. On our way back bought some gifts for those lovely little people at home.

Last stop was the Jade Factory. Coming in we got a very friendly welcome with a video about their work. Then a lovely lady told us a little about real and fake Jade and all its sorts. Going into the factory itself you find out it’s like maybe 6 little workstations where the artists do their crafting. But then we got to the shop. Beautiful stones! After trying on a ring that apparently would cost us 4000$ we told them we were here for souvenirs…

So that was a traditional touristic day. For something less traditional but still very touristic we took a bus to Chiang Rai up North close to the Borders with Burma and Laos. Also called the golden triangle from the time of poppy-flower harvest also known as Opium. But we didn’t traveled here for that…

We visited the White Temple and the Black Museum. The White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, is a temple that has been altered and improved by a Thai artist (might have smoked some opium back in the day) 20 years ago. The whole tempel and surrounding chedi’s and ornaments are white. Even most of the fish in the pond. This is just an amazing sight.

After that we went to the Black Museum(just as every other tourist around us). Also know as Baan Dam Black House Museum. This artist went in the opposite direction. Not only are all the buildings black, but they are filled with sculptures and furniture made of bones and animal skin. (This artist most definitely smoked something) Here it was also the case of waiting or pushing for that photo of something, no clue what but it looks cool…

Last but not least we met up with fiends from Amsterdam and went to the Chiang Mai Zoo. Doesn’t really need explaining except we were in really good company!

Of course it was again a week in Thailand to never forget, lots of good food, drinks, music and good people!
